Grilled Squid, Bao, Sushi Tacos: Aji's New Sharing Plates

Three new sharing plates at Aji: whole grilled squid with tare glaze, soft pork bao, and crispy salmon sushi tacos. The izakaya spirit, in Rosemont.

Grilled Squid, Bao, Sushi Tacos: Aji's New Sharing Plates

Aji's new menu is built around a simple idea: honest dishes, made with care, meant to be shared. Here are three new arrivals that capture that direction.

The whole grilled squid

The whole squid is grilled, then lacquered with a sweet-savoury tare sauce and sprinkled with sesame. The flesh stays tender, the surface lightly caramelises. It is a generous dish, served whole on the board, made for sharing. A squeeze of citrus before serving and it is ready.

The grilled pork bao

Bao are Japanese steamed buns: soft, almost cloud-like, lightly sweet. We fill them with grilled pork, crisp julienned vegetables and fresh herbs. You eat them by hand, in two or three bites, and the contrast between the tender bun and the lacquered pork is the whole pleasure. Our portion comes with two.

The salmon sushi tacos

The sushi tacos are our fusion wink: a crispy taco-shaped shell filled with fresh salmon, sushi-style. The crunch of the shell meets the softness of the fish, with a touch of sauce and freshness. Playful, photogenic, and perfect to open an evening. Our portion comes with two.

Grilled Octopus (Tako): The Izakaya Dish to Rediscover at AjiAnother sharing plate, tender and lacquered, in the same spirit.

The art of sharing, izakaya-style

Izakaya is a way of eating as much as a menu. You order a little at a time, reorder often, and share everything. The squid, the bao and the sushi tacos are made for that: you pick from the centre of the table, between sips, and the evening builds plate by plate.

Yakitori, Karaage, Edamame: The Classics of the Izakaya

The izakaya menu is built around small, shareable dishes designed to pair with drinks: skewered chicken traditionally grilled over charcoal, Japanese fried chicken with a rice-flour crust, salty edamame, pan-fried gyoza, and silky fried tofu. Order a few at a time, share everything.
